The Nerdies 2010- Results!
It’s been three weeks of mayhem. Some of it was hairy, most of it was fun. We’ve raised a good amount of money for Wet Nose and have been lucky enough to gain some really cool sponsorships for prizes.
I’ll be tackling the auction run this weekend and will hopefully have a round up of who owes what early next week. For now though, I want to tell you a bit about the finals.
As you know the voting polls [for the guys especially] went a bit pear shaped. This resulted in the guy finalists entering a Survivor-like tribal council where they voted each other out one by one. Eventually it came down to a tie between Nick and BlindCripple. We had to bring in some judges to discuss who they thought deserved the title more, and after a few hours of deliberation, we got our answer.
The girls weren’t nearly as painful. With compliments to each other, some of them even joining other finalists fan pages on Face Book, they had a friendly round and the public voted for whoever campaigned harder and fought for it.
Our sponsors have even given us a few extra pressies to hand out too, so I’ll start by announcing the winners of our last minute Online Treasure Hunt. These hunters had to trawl ten SA blogs, figure out the clues given and find the NerdMag trophy hidden inside the pages somewhere. 9 of these blogs were fake idols, only one handing out a unique code that had to be emailed through to me. We had over one hundred entrants! I couldn’t believe it, for a competition that lasted less than 24 hours, one hundred of you monkeys skipped out on work and trawled the web instead. The first three successful hunters to win a years subscription to Connect Magazine, a Poken & a Springleap tee each are:
- Darryn Van Der Walt
- @Beetle001
- @YellowLlama
With the 4th hunter winning a voucher worth R150 from Kalahari.net being Karen Gaylard.
Spot prizes were randomly chosen by me and they go like this:
- Obox kindly donated one of their premium themes to us to someone who needed a redesign on their blog. I chose Jenty because she needs a blog that matches her photographic talent and not just another generic theme available online.
- Cow_grrrl is mortally afraid of camera’s, but is so beautifully photogenic, that I thought with the privacy of a professional photographer, she might enjoy to take up Joyanne’s offer of a photo shoot. Cow_grrrl is this years runner up Nerdies finalist and last years Nerdies winner. This is to say thanks for her on going support.
- Kerryn tried so hard in the auction to win the bid on Angel’s cupcakes, but lost. We’re gonna send her a Springleap tee to say thanks for all her time and effort and better luck next year!
- Gina out bid everyone in the entire auction by bidding R1200 towards Cath Jenkin’s heart shaped sunglasses. She won, obviously, but to say thank you on the behalf of Wet Nose, Glugster has sponsored her R150 Kalahari voucher.
- Lastly I have to award this 30$ iTunes voucher to someone who made so much noise, offered himself as a prize for votes, gave away garden services & generally went out of his way to bugging people into voting for him. Richard Coote. Need I say more?
Right. Now down to the good stuff. The Nerdies 2010 winners are…….
@BecauseI for the girls, and @NickHuntDavis for the guys!
The each win:
- A years free hosting by EightySix, plus one .co.za domain
- Mowali & Sterkinekor hampers from Alerting The Media
- Nick gets a professional photo shoot done by Jeanette Verster Photography aka @Jenty
- 5fm Radio Station has come forward with Hampers for each of our two winners
- HyperText Media Communications have kindly put forth subscriptions to Connect Magazine for one whole year!
- Poken Africa – NerdMag branded pokens for the winners
- Springleap tee’s to each of them [Don't forget YOU as a reader can get a 30% discount off any Springleap shirt if you quote the coupon number
] - Briget will get a custom made WordPress design by her fellow 2010 winner, Nick Hunt Davis.
Congratulations everyone!
Thank you to our awesome sponsors, to the readers, the voters, the spammers and even the trolls. This years compo couldn’t have been as successful without you. And now I am officially throwing in the towel for at least a year before I contemplate doing something like this again
If you’re a winner, please contact me via email with your details so we may get your prizes off to you.

congrats to all the winners
Thank you for everything Sheena! You put in a lot of time and effort for this and I’m really glad that Wet Nose Foundation has been so well supported.
Congrats to the winners!
Aw thanks Shebee – My donation to Wet Nose stands though – even without the cupcakes

And all the spot winners!
Now Briget…according to my calculations, the phrase “THIS IS WAR” only gets you so far. You officially owe me 549 puppies
Congrats you bunch of nerds!
Awesomely done NerdMag…well done guys!
*Wo0t*snort*
Congratulations!
That SpringLeap voucher says it expired 5 days ago :-/
That springleap voucher has EXPIRED! #fail. I know a lot of effort went into this and that is really appreciated because it is for a really good cause, but unfortunately I rate this ended up being a fail. Just thought I would leave my R0.02. If I can scrap some cash together I will also make a donation, and this competition is the first time I had heard about Wet nose so I guess it was some form of a success.
I think Sheena deserves a few stiff drinks after this compo!
Well done to the winners and a huge THANK YOU to Sheena – you’re the coolerestest nerd I know.
Well done @BecauseI and @NickHuntDavis!!!
And to all the spot prize winners!
Thanks @Glugster for the voucher!
And the BIGGEST thanks have to go to Sheena!!! Well done for putting together a fantastic competition!
Congrats to the winners, and thanks to Sheena for putting up with all of us
Congratulations everyone…
And well done to Shebeeeee for all the effort she put in!
Too bad the girls’ vote was rigged. BecauseI getting that many votes that quickly? Yeah. Right.
With all due respect, the girls’ vote was also fiddled – the votes flew today, and I don’t buy the “I had four friends who rallied 50-60 votes each”. From 220′s to 570′s? Whatever.
What was most clear was the double standards on the two – absolute shock and horror, and outright accusation by ChrisM on the guys blog – without any proof whatsover (and it became quite clear it was an external party) – still not retracted, and complete silence on the fact that is was clearly happening on the other poll.
Enjoy your gifts.
I’m surprised the accusations came so late in the game, I was honestly expecting it this morning.
Can we not do the mudslinging please? If anything, it’s a waste of perfectly good mud that we could throw the girls into with bikinis on to do some proper wrestling.
Thank you everyone for your wellwishes and even some of you who haven’t
I spent an exhaustive two days canvassing votes from school kids to business’s that i know. (They have all also politely asked me not to call on them for any favors for at least another month
)
I canvassed via twitter/facebook/email/telephone/my sons highschool friends and even went into the local shopping centre and asked the vodacom/hairdresser/healthshop/jewellers/internet cafe to vote for me.. lucky for me I know these people so wasn’t chucked out on my arlie
It is disheartening to hear of such negative comments after all the effort I put into this. But there is always that, eh.
Thanks again to all of you who supported me in this and I want to give SHEBEE a HUGE Thanks for all her hard work and effort she put in to the Nerdies10!
Shebee deserves a holiday in the bahamas round about now..with footrubs and backtickles
P.S. Gobz .. puppies are on their way
Congrats to all!! And thanks for my spot prize too
that’s very cool
As a finalist in the Girls category this year I can safely say that I am deeply annoyed by the blatant cheating on the last day. 3 or 4 hundred votes in one day when you couldn’t secure half as many in a week?
Don’t insult my intelligence. SheBee – wake up and smell the coffee.
I am ashamed to have had my name associated with this farce.
Sheebee you ROCK!
Disgruntled, I’m sorry but I can’t really take an anonymous poster seriously.
The fact that you don’t have the temerity to stand up as who you really are and argue, without any real proof or even justification just leaves your argument rather hollow.
I think at this point, we can all accept that this year’s competition had its teething problems (remember it’s the first time it’s been run on such a big scale), and we can only improve it by offering POSITIVE and CONSTRUCTIVE feedback for Sheena.
Can we stop the fingerpointing, namecalling and general trolling now and celebrate the SUCCESS of what this competition really is about – having fun and raising some money for charity.
Sore losers, I’m sure you can find your way to the door.
woohoo
thanks chick!
