The Apple iPad

The Apple iPad

Steve Jobs, in his less than appropriate dress sense (loose jeans and the same polo neck jersey), made the announcement yesterday for Apple’s new tablet computer, the stupidly named “iPad”.  First up, what on earth were they thinking?  Did they not think that iPad can directly be related to the “sanitary pad”?  Already, not even 24 hours after the announce, twitter, blogs and YouTube are filled with renditions of adverts and puns that people are making out of the name.  Seriously?  Steve?  What were you thinking?

In the presentation that Steve Jobs did, he slated netbooks to the core.  Saying that the iPad is THE internet device.  ”The internet in your hand” and you can “turn the iPad on it’s side”, that it simply is “the best internet experience you will ever encounter”.  Those are some bold statements, especially the last one, since the iPad, running on iPhone OS 3.2, still doesn’t provide Flash support.  So how could it possibly be the best experience?

Now personally, I don’t think the tablet market has ever been a big market.  The Mac Book air failed because it was too thin and performance was hindered due to the slow solid state disk it used.  Sales were nowhere near their projections.  So in light of the general slow uptake of the tablet PC, what are their reasons for taking the iPhone, making it wider, and longer, with the same issues everyone has been complaining about (lack of flash support) and removing the phone capabilities?  At the end of the day, people, we merely have an iPod Touch with a bigger screen and a crappy name.

Now don’t get me wrong.  I am a big advocate of  Apple products, but sometimes, just sometimes the greatest of companies can create hype about the most amazing future products, only to launch something that isn’t all that different from what they already have, and which has not addressed any of the issues that users have had in the past (once again, the Flash support).

However, one thing that does excite me out of this, is what we can possibly expect for my iPhone when OS 3.2 is released.  Looking forward to seeing a similar UI to that of the iPad on my iPhone.

A perfect example of Apple creating perception, but not delivering on expectations.

Um. I actually haven’t looked up anything it does and I don’t really want to know either because at the end of the day, it will just be another overpriced Apple gadget. *shrug*

I just fail to see the appeal at all.

But then maybe the overzealous fanboys can tell me.

Yeah, sheesh that’s a horrible name. I was hoping they’re going to announce the new iPhone, not this stew of bad ideas.
