The real RPG Playing games, sounds a tad juvenile?
“ASL”, “Do you cyber?”
From the World of Warcraft straight to the bedroom, role playing games (RPGs) aren’t just for nerds and geeks anymore (I’m damn proud to be one of them).
Think about it, when the sex life gets a little down and out (excuse the pun) what’s the first advice you get? That’s right, “Why not try dressing up?”. Because as we all know, being your sexy self just ain’t gonna cut it anymore. By day, a mild-mannered accountant, but by night, “Me, Tarzan you, Jane; me show you my…
I’m always amazed at how the world of gaming (console and P.C) falls into real life. Let’s look at the similarity between RPGs and dating sites. Bear with me; I’m pretty sure I’m on to something.
For the sake of knowing what I’m talking about, I will use the comparison between Guild Wars and Shaadi.org (even my aunt who for all intents and purposes, cannot send an email, has managed to put up a personals ad on the site).
Guild Wars:
Pick your class- warrior, ranger, necromancer, monk, elementalist, ritualist, assassin, dervish or paragon.
Shaadi.Org
What are you looking for- Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Telegu, Punjab etc.
Do you see the similarity?
RPGs lets you determine your character’s personality by the choices you make through the course of the game, while some older RPGs conforming to the D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) system let you choose your alignment at the start. So do dating sites, you choose who you’re interested in, what you’re like in essence you are whoever you want to be:
I’m a fun loving woman who enjoys long walks on the beach. I’m looking for a hardcore South African of lean build, wheatish complexion who knows his way around…oops.
In both cases you choose who you want to be, in order to interact with other people. So what does this all mean? Will these worlds merge as was portrayed in Demolition Man where the act of sex is performed only in the imagination of the participants and you can choose to be whoever you want to be?
Possibly, the point really is that even if you aren’t a gamer, gaming does influence your world in some way or another.
As for role playing games and dating. Don’t kid yourself, no matter what you say it’s all about the game. They both have distinct rules and ethics; they both let you explore new avenues (trying to eliminate the Second Life comparison because that’s just too obvious).
Also, if you think you’ve met a hot chick on a dating site, or on World of Warcraft, I’m pretty sure you need to investigate that one a tad further.
