A letter to Santa with a few requests.

A letter to Santa with a few requests.

Dear Santa,

I’m sorry I’m doing this so late. By now you must be up to your ears in letters from children who remembered to do this earlier in the year (or at least didn’t wait until two weeks before your busiest day of the year).
I know it can’t be easy for you right now. I certainly wouldn’t want to be in your position – The angry politics of Elf unions and having to find the perfect piece of coal for the likes of Jacob Zuma. By the way, if you can find a bull shaped piece of coal for him that would really be perfect.

Now that I have what I hope is your full attention, there’s just a few things I’d love to find in my stocking this year. In fact, I think I can save you some time and say that these are ten things any geek would love to have and they’d forget any of your past transgressions such as getting a Robin costume instead of Batman one when they were five years old. That really was a tremendous oversight on your part.

1. iPhone 3gs
I know some people prefer the Blackberry but let’s be honest; no one would refuse such a beautiful machine. Personally, I’d prefer a Motorola Droid of course, but since those aren’t available in South Africa just yet and I know you’d have a devil of a time getting one, I’ll settle for the iPhone.
There’s just so much it can do besides being used for its most basic function as a phone. Email, mobile browsing, aiding and abetting stalking, being a fake lightsaber…Hell, it even has the ability to copy (or cut) and paste, something its predecessors were just too inferior to incorporate.

2. Logitech G19 Keyboard for Gaming
I was just talking about this to someone funnily enough so you know I’m not the only lunatic to want one.
Don’t even begin to tell me that there are superior keyboards out there – or prettier ones. I know this. After all, you already brought the early delivery of the Logitech MX 5500 Revolution combo set for the love of my life. I will admit it is gorgeous and wonderfully useful, but the gamer inside of me really wants the G19 with its beautiful little LCD screen, programmable G-keys and handily accessible USB ports. Actually, I’m quite sold on the ridiculous backlit buttons too – they’re quite handy when you’re sitting in the dark after having a little bit too much egg nog and you actually need to look down at the keys to see what you’re typing. I’m sure you know what I mean. By the way how much brandy do you go through each year?

3. Kindle DX Wireless Reading Device
I hope you’ve heard about this by now (because if you haven’t you’re really behind the times up there in the North Pole), but the Kindle is finally available in South Africa.
Don’t start; I know what you’re going to say. Amazon hasn’t been looking too good this year when it comes to the Kindle and how much access they have to a user’s content. You of all people though should know that sometimes a girl just needs to travel light and can’t haul hundreds of actual books with her wherever she goes. The Kindle is just so convenient that way.
And they’ve finally incorporated a PDF reader, you know what I mean? Okay, I know, technically Foxit has a PDF reader similar to the Kindle out already called the eSlick (and has been available in SA since last year) but it’s just not as aesthetically pleasing. Also, to be quite honest, they’re charging an arm and a leg for very few features and a teensy weensy little screen. Of course there’s always the Barnes and Noble Nook, I’d consider that as a decent runner up.

4. miSoccer by Speakal
As you know, it’s the end of the year right? So that just means we’re that much closer to 2010 and the FIFA World Cup. It’s all very exciting, especially for us who have been able to watch the Cape Town stadium get that much closer to completion every day. Don’t worry; you’ll be able to tap into that excitement in just a few short months. Until then though, there’s a little something fun to tide us over.
The miSoccer iPod docking station is brought to us by the same people who gave us the iPig (so cute, I’m sure you’ll agree). It has a lovely 2.1 Stereo speaker system plays and charges most iPods, even my ancient little Nano. Oh yeah, and it’s in the shape of a football and comes in the colour pink which is just so freaking cool.

5. Watchmen Ultimate Cut
Look, you can get this one on DVD for me if you really want to, but I’d prefer Blu-Ray for that extra zing.
Not everyone will appreciate this one though so maybe you should just buy it for me and those people you see drooling over it. I know that sounds odd, but hey, people are different and some just don’t see it as the masterpiece you and I know it is. You should just give those people some coal maybe.
Okay, that wasn’t very nice. Perhaps you could get them one of the other anticipated movie releases this Christmas season (I wouldn’t be opposed to getting these either by the way):
Star Trek, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince or District 9

6. R2D2 Christmas Lights
Tell me you don’t look at these and feel your toes curl? You can’t can you? They took my breath away when I first saw them, honestly.
Don’t tell me it’s late in the game for Christmas decorations either. These beauties are so fantastic that I would put them up all year round. Maybe draped over the beds headboard to set the theme for that whole Tatooine thing…
Erm.
Or to give my church group something to talk about. Yes. That’s it. No gold bikinis or lightsaber puns here. Move along.

7. Sony Playstation 3
I know what you’re thinking, “Don’t you already have one of these?”
The answer is yes, I do. But in the spirit of Christmas, I’m looking beyond myself here and thought about what other geeky things other people really need and the PS3 is just that.
Many of them already have an Xbox 360 or a Wii perhaps, but that’s just not good enough. The PS3 will allow them access to some of the most awesome games like inFAMOUS or Uncharted 2 AND it’s a Blu-Ray player and Media Server to boot.
Also it never suffers from the red ring of death. I’m just saying.

8. Garmin nuvi 1690
If you have a smartphone, which I’m sure you do you old devil, then there’s probably no need for this these days. Taking out your phone isn’t always convenient while you’re steering those reindeer (or in my case, driving a car) so that’s what this is for!
This is one stunning navigator. Okay sure, I know some of its features are over the top and redundant with some of the other gadgets you could get me but really, I just love the design and it’s good for the environment to with an ecoRoute planning feature.

9. Radio Controlled Desktop Forklift
A lot of the time, work can be boring. I may love what I’m doing, but there will still be days where I just want to see how many times I can use the stapler on my head before I give in to the pain.
Or I’m feeling lazy and don’t want to lean across the desk to get a pen or my drink or something.
Either way, this is perfect.
Hey, if they’re out of stock or something when you get it for me, don’t worry I will settle for R/C Zombie or the Mobile Surveillance Robot.

10. a320 Pocket Retro Game Emulator
For those of us who grew up gaming, this little gadget is beyond epic. Let me just explain it to you real quick Santa.
The a320 Pocket Retro Game Emulator will play Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Game Boy Advanced, Sega Genesis or Neo Geo roms on the go. Anywhere. On a device that looks similar to a Game Boy. It’s almost too perfect.
The best part is that it comes with 4gb of built in storage so you may never have to use the mini SD slot that it has to expand beyond that and you don’t have to load any emulator software. You just copy the roms over and start playing.
But wait! There’s more!
This little gadget can also play movie files, audio files, view jpg images, read e-books, do voice recording and has a built-in FM radio. I’m sure there’s more but really, my eyes had glazed over by that point from pure bliss.
Have I sold you on it yet? If there’s anything on this list you should definitely be getting me, this is it.

So there you have it Santa, just a short list to get you started on what to buy geeks like me this Christmas. I think I deserve it, that Robin costume was pretty crappy.

Kind Regards,
Your Fan forever
Gobz

  1. Briget says:

.. and all I asked for was an electric can opener!?!

I need to rethink my list :|

  2. At the same time as I really like a bodily keyboard, after dealing with the Samsung Captivate for roughly quarter-hour, it is arduous to move back. Right now I’m debating whether to visit Verizon for the Droid X, pass to Dash for the EVO, or stick with AT&T for the Captivate…choices, decisions.
