A nerd’s definition of ‘beautiful’.

Beauty is:

The accepted convention of what is considered beautiful is somewhat straight forward. Flowers, a sunset, the waves crashing on the shore at the beach. These things are all generally considered beautiful post_imagethrough the eyes of the average Joe. What about nerds? Do they consider these things as “beautiful”? I’d go so far as to say, “yes”. I do also believe, however, that nerds are rather blessed when it comes to the definition of beauty, Nerds are able to appreciate a different kind of beauty in addition to the accepted definition. A unique beauty, if you will. The question remains, “what is this beauty?” Beauty is…

  • … the simplicity of having as few icons on your desktop… or none at all.
  • … knowing exactly what processes are running in your OS’s task manager.
  • … streamlining your startup sequence to as few applications as possible.
  • … a streamlined OS X dock with as few icons as possible.
  • … using applications that work perfectly in sync with one another… even if the icon isn’t the best.
  • … choosing an application purely for it’s icon. Beauty is on the outside as well as on the inside. Not necessarily at the same time.
  • … the sleak, polished design of the controller of your latest gaming console.
  • … using the Terminal simply because you can.
  • … Growl. ’nuff said.
  • … user interface design. It’s, like, all about the user’s etherial experience, man.
  • … synchronising all your gadgetry seemlessly. Having the same email, contacts, calendar and documents on your laptop, desktop, PDA, mobile phone and iPod is pretty beautiful.

The above definitions of beauty are nothing if not unique to nerds. To the masses, they may be unimportant nonsense, but to nerds, they are a way of life.
