What’s the difference between a Geek and a Nerd?
A long long time ago, when I was just a wee young Gobby, a programmer gave me a very long lecture on why it was incorrect that I call him a ‘nerd’. Despite his obsession with conspiracy theories and his hentai based fantasies of growing six tentacles, he claimed the title of ‘geek’. Being called a nerd and identified as one was the worst insult the dude could imagine.
Even worse than that? One time a girl told him his light sabre was too short.
Today, I have realised the error of my ways and now, I’m ready to help others realise theirs. All you have to do is look at the questions below:
- Have you chosen an obscure interest to follow fervently?
- Does your hair represent your individual style and gives the man the finger?
- Do you spend an astonishing amount of time on the internet?
- Do you know what /b/ is?
- Despite your obsessions, do you still enjoy socialising and have a circle of friends whom you see in the real world?
If you answered yes to these questions, then I am happy to inform you that you are a geek.
Did none of these ring true? Don’t worry, I have some more for you:
- Are you socially awkward and a loner?
- Do you have an above average intelligence?
- Do you know what a tetrahedron is?
- Did you lose your virginity to a blow up doll named ‘Lucy’?
- Can you recite PI up until the 65th digit?
If you answered yes to these questions, then you are, without a doubt, a nerd.
Now I have one final question…
Does all of that sound like complete and utter rubbish?
That’s because it is.
The main difference between nerds and geeks is that geeks have had better marketing in the past few years. The media has conditioned us to believe that geeks are cool to the core and nerds are a group of acne infested loners who push the boundaries of kinky practices with their chess pieces.
In reality, nerds are just as cool. Just look at some of the nerd celebrities that exist.
Natalie Portman went to Harvard and can speak five languages.
Dolph Lundgren, a man so awesome he was The Punisher and He-Man, has a master’s in Chemical Engineering and supposedly has an IQ of 160.
And the ultimate celebrity nerd?
Asia Carrera, porn queen. Not only could she probably cut your penis off with her vagina of awesomeness, but she could have a screaming orgasm in Japanese while playing Beethoven’s 7th Symphony at the same time.
Holy crap but us nerds are cool!

Recently when I was speaking to a friend of mine. I called him a nerd. He corrected me by saying that he is a geek. To me they were one and the same, but he informed me that a geek is a nerd but with social skills.
Which to me sounds like a nerd just trying to be cool. Who cares really? Nerds are cool in their own right.
