Fore(ward).

In the month of May 2004, I started writing for the first time in my life. I hadn’t thought about what I was going to write about even, so I just started jotting down a daily diary. Eventually my hand couldn’t keep up with my mind, so I used the skills I’d learnt at Technicon and eventually taught myself to type pretty fast. This enabled me to write full chapters of words that, surprising to me even, actually made sense and didn’t sound too bad.
One day while emailing a friend of mine, I was lead to her blog. I was entranced. I heard angels singing, birds tweeting & I even saw little shooting stars – blogging! I could do this! And so I did it.
I went through the motions of becoming a blogger, my first attempt was horrendous. Everytime I read through it (yes, I was – and still am – my number one reader) I would cringe. Somewhere along the line, I found my groove, came out of the from the darkness and became this “funny” blogger I’ve become today. And then I was sent an email inviting me to join something called “Facebook”.
You could say that it all went downhill from there. I’ve fallen in love with the internet, social media & meeting people screen-to-screen as opposed to face-to-face ever since. One morning I woke up from a dream involving twitter and facebook at war, and the realisation hit that this wasn’t just a normal fondness for a hobby – I’d transformed into a geek when I wasn’t looking. How did this even happen?
I decided there and then that I wanted more than blogging. I wanted something bigger. I wanted to create something that would give back to the internet in thanks for what it’s done for me and my personal life journey. Something not just with my story, but with others too. And I wanted it to be about my passion, the internet and all the wonderful experiences that go with it. And so I’ve done it.
Thank you, my co-founders, Shawn and Neels and to Richard (who never saw it coming) for the way he went out of his way – often til the early hours – for designing. Without you boys this e-mag would not have been possible. Thank you for putting up with my demands, ideas and for not lobbing shoes at me when I suggested absurdities in the middle of the night. Also I must say well done to the columnists for putting together fantastic articles for our launching issue.
And hello to you, supertastic readers! I do hope you’ll love it as much as I’ve hated it at moments of severe exhaustion, frustration & exasperation. I hope the end product makes you want to print it out into a little fluffy bunny and squeeze it for all you’re worth. For best viewing of all the posts, go through each category by clicking on them, the posts will magically appear, I know – its so clever. Please bare with us if there are any (PLEASE GOD, NO!) glitches – we are in early days here, although we’ve tested the site upside down and inside out and it works for us, so here’s hoping! Feel free to vote on what you think, to the left of this screen, or leave any comments on your thoughts of your first reaction.
I welcome you to Nerd Mag – for geeks. It’s for me, it’s for you.
